How will networking work in Vista? I've heard it's been changed. Will it work with XP computers?
Thanks.

Networking
It does right now: my test computer is on Vista, the work one is on XP Pro, and with build 5308 I can share folders both ways, which didn't work with the previous build unless I disabled the firewall on Vista. -- Pierre Szwarc Paris, France PGP key ID 0x75B5779B ------------------------------------------------ Multitasking: Reading in the bathroom ! ------------------------------------------------

I've made a sharing for my girlfriend to backup some data, but she can't write-access it, even if, when I mount it as a network share, I set "log on as a different user" and I give "VISTACOMPUTER\mylogin" / my_password. And for my HD media player (DVico Tvix M5000-U), which needs a share to access movies on my computer (if i've not put them in the integrated hard disk), it needs Guest account to access the share. But even if I've enabled Guest account, allowed Network sharing in Vista FW, set all the rights to Guest on this shared folder, (and even if I disable the firewall), the player can't access the share, it seems unable to even see the share, while if I reboot to XP, where I've done the same things, there's no problem at all. I'd like to make it work with Vista, so I would not have to reboot to XP sometimes.

I just installed a new network card and a window pops up and reads:
Windows Networking
Choose a network category
* This is a public network Use for networks in public places where you don't want people to access your computer
* This is my private network Use for your home or personal network where you want to share files and devices.
Just thought you should know the wording is a kinda mixed up and confusing. Might want to fix that.

I think it is pretty clear. When you use a public network you want highest security.

I also found this slightly puzzling (had to stop + think for a moment)
I want to access public services (HTTP, FTP) but my computer is not connected diretly to the internet - its via a home network
I don't consider myself to be using a public network, but I don't want others to access my computer
I consider myself to be using a private network, but i don't want to share my files or devices with the rest of ther world!
It is not immediately obvious which to choose?
I think it could be better worded (not only for noobs - I work with networks / subnets / routing etc a lot - it made me stop & think!)
BTW, home network users, choose private!

I have a home network set up in our house. My computer has Vista while the other two have XP. Whenever I try to add or change anything in my Public folder on either of the XP machines, I get told that I can't and the access is denied. I want to be allowed to add and change files on the Public folder from the XP machines. How can I accomplish this? Thanks.
Travis,
I have this working OK on my home network. Make sure that you have enabled access appropriately for the Public folder on your Vista system. There is a good explanation in Vista's help. Here is a portion that might be helpful:
To control access to the Public folder Click the Start button, click Documents, click the arrow next to Folders at the bottom of the Navigation pane, and then click Public. On the toolbar, click Sharing Settings, and then click one of the three options for allowing access to your Public folder.
Save your new settings and give it a few minutes to propogate before trying to access from your XP systems.

I am having a similar problem too. I have a computer with is still running Windows 98 and I cannot connect to the network printer on the main computer (install Vista on) I was able to connect my notebook computer (running Windows XP Pro) and it work fine. Is there something I am doing wrong or missed?
